A 3ª edição do Festival do Castanho foi, na sua primeira semana, um grande encontro de amigos e amigas que se uniram, pensaram e realizaram obras no castanho.
Com sensibilidades e sabedorias diferentes, empenharam-se em transmitir e entrecrtuzar as artes diponíveis para experimentar: a cúlinária verdadeiramente curiosa e genuína, a pintura com texturas e tocada por muitas mãos, a cerâmica com atividade contínua, a jóia do castanho, também sempre em criação, a gravura, com uma intensidade curiosa, o cabeçudo que deu volta às cabeças mas surgiu cabeçudo, o ferro forjado que teve uma animação de força e fogo, o vídeo que estava sempre lá para captar o máximo, a imagem animada que sintetiza o belo e interessante do castanho, o concerto dos "Meshmass" que nos deixou a todos a dançar, a performar e a brincar num grande momento de diversão, a dança e o teatro com uma presença fresca e elegante.
A inauguração da exposição foi o clímax da harmonia que existiu entre todos os participantes, que estiveram sempre em actividade durante quatro dias. Foi lindo!!!
Gostaríamos de manter esta força animada até ao próximo castanho, e que todas as amigas e amigos voltassem com a mesma energia que nos ligou neste maravilhoso Festival do Castanho!

what a lovely time we had at the third festival of brown. the exhibition continues until november 12th, but for now the workshops, concerts and events are over. a big thankyou to all those who gave workshops (in ceramics, painting, photography, dance, etching, jewelry, papier-maché, cooking, baking, metal-work and animated film), participated in them, and staged events and interventions throughout the festival - there were moments of unpredictable magic all week. thanks as well to the ecomuseu and to the câmara of montalegre for their support and assistance, for the use of the ecomuseu, the huge and extraordinary space of the multiusos, the student accommodation and the grounds of the castle.

on monday we had a meeting which although short was too long, and a meal in a restaurant which was also too long and was put to shame by the food prepared by the participants throughout the week. we were therefore late for the press conference which in any case we did not want to do, at which orlando alves of montalegre town council sat with the organising committee of sabine portela, zé teixeira, maria carvalho and peter pick and gave a speech about inclusivity. there was an eloquent response from the floor by ícaro pintor whose contributions throughout the week are worthy of particular mention. when asked to say something peter pick asked "can we go now?" and the representatives of the press who we had already kept waiting looked justly furious.

we began to unwrap the works contributed for the standing exhibition and made a start on arranging them in the exhibition space. unfortunately, no sooner had we set up the first room than workmen arrived to sand and varnish the floor.

on tuesday the workshops started huddled separately within the enormous multiusos. maria carvalho and georgina queiróz oversaw the ceramics in which individual pieces by each participant were designed to be assembled into a tower, and sabine portela the painting. tomás dias began with the very popular etching workshop and carried on indefatigably it seemed virtually 24 hours a day. the painting workshop started with the fundamentals of stretching and fixing the canvas, and was later to include the manufacture and use of the ancient medium of egg tempera. rita miranda, ran a workshop in jewelry-making using wire and wool which produced intricate and stylish results. that evening peter pick was brought 3 enormous cakes (as it was his birthday, he informed everyone) and was forced to deliver a heartfelt speech which (it seemed) contained only the words "really wonderful". unseen by nearly all, pedro braga organised wonderful food for all participants on a very limited budget. by thursday people were arriving from porto, having heard that a cheap and delicious meal was available.

the stop-motion animation workshop, run by tânia duarte with assistance from quico serrano and ícaro began the next day, and besides that tânia and quico filmed almost everything that went on throughout the week. nigel french arrived, fresh from handing in his m.a. project to conduct and friday and saturday's photography workshop. gitte ernst held a workshop in baking honeycake, which i can tell you was delicious.

on thursday horst stricker initiated a very popular metal-working workshop with two portable forges which continued the next day. horst was kept very busy trying to control a large number of participants all holding red hot metal bars which they worked into some surprisingly delicate shapes. in the evening, after yet another lavish meal 'meshmass' (richard miles: guitar and effects; and peter pick: laptop, alto saxophone and vocals) played in the great hall of the multiusos in almost complete darkness. they played for about 3 hours. quico helped them, playing keyboard. ícaro showed films on one wall and intervened in the audience. there was dancing. peter was wheeled about on a trolley by nigel, first playing the saxophone, but then screaming and dragging people out of the crowd. later he went out again with ícaro's megaphone, and ended up singing apparently in welsh. the sound was projected down from the ceiling and filled the aircraft-hanger sized multiusos like a ghostly and pervading presence with assistance from josé alves' p.a. (get better soon, josé!) after about 2 hours there was something of a chaotic period when the microphone was taken over by a succession of impromptu vocalists (among the best were ana lousada and carolina teixeira) and then richard's effects broke down (there was a screw loose - wouldn't you have guessed?) before control was regained and meshmass played us out. it was an extraordinary event full of unexpected theatre and even some music. there are photographs on the montalegre website (link below) but these are taken with flash and so do not convey the atmosphere, although it is wonderful to see them.

on friday nigel conducted the first part of his photography workshop and the standing exhibition was prepared - again. the opening ceremony began with an extraordinary performance and installation event conducted by ícaro and included performances of 'things to say about brown' in portuguese and english, sara leite sang a beautiful unaccompanied 'summertime' with a hint of fado influence and bruna martins performed a brilliant ecstatic dance to the accompaniment of clapping and bells. the whole event was surprising and well received.

saturday saw the conclusion of the photography workshop, and in the evening the company gathered within the castle walls to watch as carlos neto carefully managed the firing of the paper kiln. this wigwam-like structure of paper, stones and clay was filled with the products of the ceramic workshop and fuelled by wood. at first it produced huge quantities of smoke which filled up the castle and eventually the entire valley, attracting the bombeiros (fire brigade) who arrived in a land rover, but were persuaded that no harm was being done, except perhaps to people's washing and drove off again. eventually, as the clay inside dried and georgina queiróz patched up the holes that appeared in the skin of the kiln with liquid clay in paper the temperature was increased and bright flames shot out of the top. handfuls of salt were thrown in to appease the angry gods. ines vicente (with some help from zé and the crowd) gave a performance of a short piece by italo calvino, and bruna, carolina and joão soares performed a sort of shadow-show against the castle wall, making clever use of found lighting. on sunday morning the kiln was opened revealing a collection of beautiful pieces, subtly transformed by the fire. those belonging to the workshop were assembled into a tower which can be seen in the foyer of the ecomuseu, together with the results of the painting, etching and papier-maché workshops (special thanks to orlandina pinto e teresa pedrosa). later in the day short films shot at the festival were shown, and the advertisement 'spot' for the festival of brown 2012, made in the animation workshop concluded the programme.

there was a lot of hugging, and then gradually, we all went away, tired, and happy, and well fed and a little sad, and smelling of smoke.

Da avaliação do 2º Festival do Castanho, a interacção criativa foi o ponto alto do evento, o que nos levou ao desafio de organizar o 3º Festival do Castanho. Assim, no sentido de criar maior dinâmica entre os participantes, optamos este ano por três pontos distintos: 1. A criação de oficinas, nas diversas expressões artísticas, no sentido de interagir, fazer e aprender, dando oportunidade aos interessados de proporem uma ideia a desenvolver. 2. A exposição das obras seleccionadas. 3. Eventos. Nesta fase, destacamos o ponto 1. Assim, vimos convida-lo/a a propor uma ideia para a realização de uma oficina, que decorrerá no ecomuseu do Barroso em Montalegre entre 22 e 25 de Agosto de 2011. Brevemente, receberá mais informações para a participação na exposição permanente que decorrerá de 26 de Agosto a 12 de Novembro de 2011. Mais uma vez, temos o apoio do ecomuseu de Barroso e da Câmara Municipal de Montalegre.

Friends of Brown! after consideration we have decided that the best and most rewarding parts of the second festival of brown involved the participation of all those present, and we intend to concentrate more on participatory events in the third festival, which will take place in Montalegre, Tras os Montes, Portugal from 22nd of August to 12 of November 2011. Before the opening of the standing exhibition on the 26th of August there will be four days of workshops/experiences, some of which are already decided, and others of which we hope you will offer ideas for. we also intend once again to curate a standing exhibition and to stage various performances and events in different venues around Montalegre and the surrounding area. one proposal is for an open air firing of clay pieces with music within the castle walls. we also intend to feature performances of electro-acoustic music, theatre, and a saxophone quartet. so, from the 22nd to the 25th of August (inclusive) we wish to offer exciting participatory events of various durations and in various media. Our idea is that each workshop will produce a piece or pieces which will be included in the exhibition. materials (within reason) for these workshops will be payed for, and those offering them will be given accomodation and food. we welcome proposals for video, music, sculpture, theatre, ceramics and any other medium with a connection to the theme of BROWN. we need these proposals to be returned to us by 15th May. we are once again delighted and quite surprised by the enthusiasm shown by our friends, the friends of brown, and we look forward to a highly enjoyable event! very best wishes from the brown group, the grupo castanho (your humble committee) Maria Carvalho, Peter Pick, Sabine Portela, Zé Teixeira.

......apesar das ameaças de tormentas outonais, a visita ao pisão foi interessante, com o pisoeiro a ensinar-nos in situ o funcionamento do engenho de pisoar lã e produzir burel, para capas e mantas. A refeição micológica incluiu kirsch de cogumelos, sopa de cogumelos, cogumelos com vitela. O pisoeiro é também conhecedor das espécies desta região. Na viagem tivemos a sorte de apreciar o nascimento de uma cria de vaquinha barrosa, nascida em pleno lameiro. Vimos a igreja velha, os sarcófagos medievais, o poço de entrada de uma misteriosa galeria subterrânea, os carvalhos da cruz, juntando os patrimónios naturais e construídos, em pleno burgo de Salto antigo. No Museu Casa do Capitão vimos o filme sobre o mesmo pisão, realizado em 1970 pela equipa do Instituto de Göttinger, com o pai do actual pisoeiro em laboração.

day one, friday

the festival opened with a brief introduction from sabine portela, the now traditional reading of 'things to say about brown' in english and portuguese (the latter version read by the heroic maria carvalho) and a short speech by the representative of the câmara municipal of montalegre, fátima fernandes. there were a surprising number of television and radio crews present, and sabine and maria were each interviewed several times. even peter pick, who is too stupid to speak portuguese was interviewed, and when asked if there was anything else he would like to say replied 'no'.

the exhibition, which continues until december the 15th over four floors of the ecomuseu, features work in ceramics, painting, sculpture, installation, photography and fabric, and some things that are not quite any of these, or are a combination of several. it contains work by 39 different artists and was duly explored, enjoyed and discussed by the gathered people

there was port wine and small nibbles which tasted of lentils and possibly olives. i did not get enough of these. there was then music from laptop, tenor sax, trumpet and percussion, involving young musicians josé alves, and simão and tomás ferreira. this was surprisingly successful considering that the musicians had only two sessions to become accustomed to each other, and people sat, listened and even clapped. the slideshow of photographs from four continents was shown.

day two, saturday

the programme of workshops began, with shari baker and mark sullivan initiating their gruelling (for them) and popular and rewarding (for participants) series of video and audio experiments. the aim of these workshops was to encourage the participants to explore new ways of working with and new ideas about video, audio and their combination.

rita miranda, who had already prepared the ground in a literal sense, digging and hoeing the area she had claimed for fornos na terra began this very intriguing and popular workshop in the morning. participants watered a small square of ground, buried a foot, or sometimes a hand within it and waited until it solidified, then removing the foot (or whatever part of their anatomy they had immured) and leaving a hollow space which was then used as a mould for a cast in plaster of paris. when these were recovered and washed the resultant objects were both surprising and delightful.

a bus was organised to take people to the casa do capitão, salto, where ícaro had set up his exhibition/installation/experience equilíbrio. he gave a short talk and played a video before releasing the assembled multitude into the outside world where the various arrangements of sticks, blocks, nails and and stones awaited. an enchanted couple of hours ensued, in which the assembly reverted to childhood, playing with great concentration and seriousness, balancing the various pieces in various ways whilst being hampered by a tricky wind. enjoyment and even delight were widespread, perhaps universal as person after person attempted to achieve a moment of perfect equilibrium.

after the mass return from salto there was a 'fashion show' - desfile de roupa - featuring the clothes made by meg (maria eugénia gomes) and fatima gavinho, which were worn with charm, humour and elan by brave young volunteers. this was followed by the showing of the programme of videos which featured work by shari baker, shari baker and mark sullivan, peter pick, and rita miranda. some applause was heard, and this series of videos should be played at intervals throughout the exhibition for those interested.

in the early evening, trepidatious but obedient to their schedule, mark sullivan, peter pick and the heroically creative ícaro began jamming with laptop, guitar and voice in the projection room, but sabine appeared and said everyone wanted to eat, and jamming would be better done outside, and later. the participants looked worried and reluctant, but headed off to the restaurant anyway. pick complained about how his laptop wouldn't be audible without amplification, and mark looked even more doubtful than before, adopting the gait of a sulking bear. nevertheless they reconvened at about 9.30 on the terrace, which was now illuminated by paper-bag lanterns. mark gave a learned disquisition about these, which he claims are in use at mexican funerals, but we just think they're pretty. there followed an hour and a half or more of quite sublime participatory music-making of which i am most proud. in this time the entire gathering contributed to the ongoing improvisation which was initiated by peter pick, whose contribution was soon transcended by that of carolina teixeira, and adorned and supplanted by ícaro (vitor pires) while mark sullivan returned from his long shambling walk to play a borrowed 3/4 size classical guitar with skill, intelligence and determination. my heartfelt thanks go out to all present - i do not think anyone there did not join in at some point, in some way, and their mere presence was telling. we came there with nothing and made something good. it is my view that there is no higher form of creativity than that.

the feeling after the saturday of the festival was exceptionally good, even the recalcitrant doctor pick smiled and talked to strangers like a human being, and everyone went away happy.

day three, sunday

sunday began with joao sá leading his eco-arte experience, which involved a ritualistic engagement with leaves and stones in an open air setting just below the castle. blindfolded participants were carefully led to a walled area where they chose and arranged stones, periodically called to rest and centre themselves by the ringing of a small bell. those involved seemed to find it a rewarding experience, and the arrangements of stones and pebbles surrounded by leaves that were left by the process were themselves an attractive testament.

in the early evening shari baker and mark sullivan, beset by technical difficulties involving a projector which would not recognise the laptop showed a video compiled from the contributions of the participants in sopa da pedra, most of whom bravely contributed some live improvised soundscapes as the tension mounted.

Reconhecer a não perfeição e/ou a deformação provocada pela acção directa do gesso na terra através de um objecto ou mesmo de uma parte do corpo escolhida pelos participantes.
Apreciar o não controle (o poder de modelagem da terra por si só) das formas de cada objecto ou parte do corpo.

Using the Portuguese fable - 'Sopa de Pedra' as the starting point and over arching concept for the creative activities.
We intend to create - over the weekend - a large 'pot' of gathered media, which will then be used by the participants to 'mash-up' and remix to create individual 'performance' pieces - either to be recorded for playback, or for live performance. We hope to have a large 'sharing' at the end of the weekend. (Sunday evening)

your noble, overworked and self-sacrificing committee is now able to publish a provisional list of the participants in the
FESTIVAL OF BROWN 2010.

apart from the fixed exhibition of visual art which will remain in situ for the extent of the festival there is also to be a programme of performances, workshops and experiences in the ECO-MUSEU and the castle grounds on the opening weekend, from friday september 3rd to sunday september 5th. these are intended to include experimental music and poetry, (friday night); classical music, (saturday night); and live audio-video mixing (sunday evening).

anyone wishing to participate in either the video/music workshops planned for saturday and sunday or the art experience with João Sá should get in touch as soon as possible with the committee at brownfestival@yahoo.com.

all proposals were gratefully received and have been carefully considered, and the international cast of contributors is confirmed as follows (barring unforseen disasters).

all manner of things

things are warming up in the world of brown. the date for proposals for the festival has now passed and the international committee of jurors are preparing for a brutal and extended session of what the politicians love to call "tough decisions" in their remote mountain fastness, cloistered away from the inevitable media glare.

it seems likely now that there will be video and environmental art workshops and a programme of musical performances on the first weekend, a slideshow of international photographers, a rolling programme of videos throughout the three months of the festival and a fixed exhibition spread over three sites featuring sculpture, painting, ceramics and some strange machines.

as the vultures circle lazily in the sky around their monastic retreat, your humble committee turns its attention to the preparation of a truly intriguing and energetic event.

naturally, if it's anything like last year very little of what is now certain will remain true.

Convido-te para participares no segundo festival internacional do castanho com uma a três obras pensadas na cor e no sentido do castanho .
Até final do mês de Junho gostaríamos de receber as imagens das obras (dimensão de fotos até 1 MB cada) que vais mostrar, assim como também as dimensões e a forma de as expor, as obras não devem ultrapassar 185 centímetros de altura e 140 centímetros de largura (85 centímetros para esculturas) - em peça única - no entanto, dependendo da sua forma e peso poderam ser aceites outros tamanhos.

a call for entries

your humble committee is proud and a little amazed to announce that after considering the various options presented to us the second festival of brown will be held from september to december in the ecomuseu in montalegre, trás-os-montes, portugal. this is an exciting new venue equipped with modern video technology set next to the castle in a town most famous for its gatherings of witches. montalegre is set deep in the northeast corner of portugal among mountains and woods, mists and moors on the edge of the gerês national park.

we could not be more pleased about this, it is a venue which will enable us to display not only a collection of fixed objects but an extensive and shifting selection of moving images, music and slideshows. it is for this reason that we now issue an early call for submissions for the event, with a particular focus on photography, painting, sculpture, and video. we intend to collate all entries and make our selection in may and june, giving us time both to assemble an exciting programme and to plan for its most advantageous display. proposals for workshops during this extended period will also be welcomed.

now that we are gone

the brown world has moved away, back to its various apartments, and we are slowly recovering. sabine portela and peter pick undertake a new adventure, carrying brown offerings to paradela do rio where they will hold a joint exhibition of paintings, video, music and photography without all the attendant distractions of the festival. this exhibition will open on the 3rd of october at 17.oo and continue on sunday 4th at arte da terra, http://www.clayarte.com/ .

sabine will be showing a series of 15 entirely previously unseen pictures with a startling surface density. she has also promised us a little brown shrine. peter will play his brown water video and reveal other musical adventures, display new photographs and may also read his poem things to say about brown, if bribed suffficiently heavily.

you will all be very welcome and may be awarded special chocolate if you are lucky.

sunday

was a more relaxed experience for all of us. apart from the permanent exhibition and the continuous slideshow from international photographers an outdoor workshop in paint and clay supervised by maria carvalho and sabine portela was enjoyed by many children, adults and people in between. strange and extraordinary clay sculptures were produced and 3 primary colours were mixed together to create both brownish and decidedly un-brown prints on a sheet of brown paper about 7 metres long. much fun was had, and much smearing went on. children played draughts (checkers to you) and spillikins (mikado to you. or pick-up-sticks) in the back room where the schools library service set up a display on the theme of a rainbow of brown. towards evening peter pick showed his own brown slideshow with music by richard miles and himself, and then played his video again, this time not quite so loud. there was more african music.

eventually, everyone started to go home and various sabines and their friends tried to eat delicious cold food in salle 1 before the children ate it all. no easy task.

festival report.......

firstly a great deal of thanks to all who assisted so bravely at the festival, including silva, salvador, maria, armando, abraão and (of course) sabine. the food was great, the workshops enjoyable and well-attended, the technical difficulties were overcome, even the reading went well and we had a very enjoyable and succesful event. special thanks to filomena who came to the rescue with not only a digital projector but also a mobile internet connection and to olinda who revised the portuguese translation and also read the brown poem with exemplary style.

saturday morning.....

after two days of technical rehearsals our dedicated team was ready to show the work of photographers from four continents. on being introduced to the wireless modem the mainframe computer which was at the heart of the complicated multi-media installation crashed, blacking out the screen. it was not until, in desperation, technical staff switched on the projector that it was possible to go through the restore program and reboot the computer to a previous configuration, one which (naturally) predated the delicate adjustments made during the technical rehearsals. frantic work ensued and the slideshow of international photographers was eventually shown succesfully all afternoon through a borrowed touchscreen notebook. thanks are once again due to filomena, and curses upon windows vista.

saturday afternoon.....

salvador portela conducted a hugely popular and productive weaving workshop which overflowed from the room. everyone was very pleased to have produced something at the end, and will no doubt distress everyone for weeks by showing them the results.

the exhibition looked beautiful and included paintings, photographs, ceramics and carvings. saints rubbed shoulders with abstract art, photographic depiction hung beside photographic abstraction. jose texeira's conceptual piece "poeta", a terracotta sphere containing illuminated letters was among my favourites. sabine portela's brown abstracts looked positively edible. a feast of brown for eyes and minds.

saturday evening....

peter pick read his poem only after throwing a wild tantrum about being half-an-hour behind schedule, claiming he had important business to attend to (a transparent lie). the people assembled reluctantly in salle 1, leaving their delicious feast of pork and chestnuts to observe the ageing maniac gesture and orate from the lectern. in the event his performance was received with rapturous incomprehension, and maria olinda alves pereira read beautifully her revised portuguese translation, receiving a well-deserved ovation.

saturday night.....

paper bag lanterns illuminated the grounds. andré passos played the guitar and sang outside while peter pick showed a video with brown music in salle 2. most people seemed a little threatened by the pulsating light and thumping, distorted noise. there was then a selection of african music to lighten the mood.

later, a festival of fire was initiated when a queimada gallega was performed by armando martins and various volunteers. a mixture of bagaço (a distillation of grapeskins), honey, sugar, oranges, coffee beans and fire was created to the accompaniment of a recitation of magical words or spells. the resultant liquid was consumed by the assembled company with unpredictable results......

coisas para dizer sobre castanho

pensa em castanho, a cor quase ignorada, vista mas despercebida...

onde está o traço castanho no espectro?
ao se decompor, a luz não o oferece.

demasiado banal para os teóricos, demasiado modesto para se exibir,
excluído do arco-íris, possui todavia extensão e profundidade,
adapta-se, é prático e simples.

aproxima-se do vermelho, mas do vermelho rubro afasta-se, para se misturar com o amarelo vivo, combinando-se com o azul tranquilo

como cresceríamos na ausência do castanho? ele é o suporte do verde que eleva ao céu, ele sustém-no

ele está junto do cinzento e é humilde. embaralha as cores e lá encontrarás o castanho
(é a minha experiência.)

alguns dizem que é apenas uma tonalidade, como o preto ou o branco,
mas isso é muito injusto. o castanho tem calor:

as coisas pardas tornam-se castanhas no forno,
as pessoas mais palidas bronzeiam-se ao sol.

o castanho é antigo, leva consigo o esfumado do tempo, a mácula,
a mancha da memória. o castanho não está ultrapassado. o castanho é útil, o castanho é de todos os dias.

ou tão rico quanto o castanho envernizado, incendiado, de uma castanha da india.

apenas podemos louvá-lo um pouco, apenas exultá-lo…..

o campo outonal. o bosque macio.

em breve as folhas serão outonos,
a nudez cobrirá as árvores

e tudo de um castanho imóvel quase cinzento

things to to say about brown

think of brown, the disregarded colour, seen but overlooked….
where is the brown segment in the spectrum?
if you split light brown does not fall out.

too earthy for the theorists, too modest for display, excluded from the rainbow, it still has
range and depth, it is adaptable, it’s practical and plain.

it comes near red but hot red turns away to mix with sunny yellow, blend with peaceful blue.

how would we grow without brown?
it holds green up to the sky,

it nourishes.

it stands next to grey and is humble.

muddle all the colours and you will find brown
there (in my experience.)

some say it’s just a tone, like black or white,
but that is quite unfair. brown has warmth:
pale things brown in ovens, pink people turn brown in the sun.

brown is old, it bears the smears of time, the stain,

the smudge of memory.
brown is not outworn. brown is useful, brown is everyday.

or as rich as the burnished auburn of a new conker.

we might just eulogise a little, we might extol......

the autumn field. the soft forest.

soon now all the leaves will be autumns,
there will be nakedness among trees
and everything a still brown that is almost grey.

Castanho é a cor subestimada, mas muito depende dela. Muitas coisas boas são castanhos;
até a própria terra. Embora o castanho nem aparece no arco-iris nem na roda das cores, é tempo para celebrar e honrar o castanho. Nesta festa queremos explorar alguns aspectos do castanho através da poesia, cerâmica, fotografia, video, música, pintura etc. e finalmente da culinária.

despite his interminable and sometimes appalling tantrums a revised portuguese translation of peter pick´s keynote poem "things to say about brown" has been prepared by the fragrant and charming maria olinda alves pereira.

the award-winning exponent of traditional portuguese and contemporary textiles salvador portela has agreed to give a workshop in weaving at the festival on saturday afternoon. this is almost booked up already, but bribes to the committee may be found acceptable and tearful children ejected onto the street.

on sunday a workshop in expressive arts exploring materials including clay and paper will be held under the supervision of maria carvalho and sabine portela.

negotiations towards a final running order of events are proceeding, if only slowly, as new contributors are being constantly sought, recruited and confirmed at a dizzying speed. it is envisaged that the afternoons will be devoted to workshops and the evenings more occupied by performances, videos and slideshows, while the exhibition space will be open at all times, and the bar and food will be outside in the grounds throughout.

disaster strikes festival !

the chocolate puppets have melted away.

perhaps due to the hot weather, perhaps due to a previously unknown and inexplicable unavailability of chocolate in portugal, perhaps because of the frankly disgraceful behaviour of that prima donna peter pick, perhaps due to their recent traumatic visit to israel (where they were escorted at all times by armed guards and allowed only to see the airport and the rear of their venue) the MAO-ist guerilla puppet theatre of viana do castelo have withdrawn from their promised performance.

so the headline act, the top billing, the earth-shattering, epoch-making, above-the-title performance of revolutionary chocolate puppeteering is not to be.

the world sighs in disappointment. brown itself is momentarily discouraged.

but we soldier on. your dauntless committee is even now in negotiation with renowned artists in various media in order to shore up the pitiful wreckage of your dreams.

rodrigo brito, the chemical photographer and exponent of surfactants is preparing an exhibit.

abraão moreira of the exclusive click bar and armando martins have taken charge of catering and are organising a concert by renowned performers of the cavacinho.

adventures on arrival

just in time for the inaugural world festival of brown they have started digging up the viana-perre road, (initiating a traffic crisis even greater than that endemic to portugal) in order to install a sewerage system.

brown enough?

we hope not......

the great sabine portela was detained at customs attempting to leave the u.k. in possession of two hard-boiled eggs concealed in her hand luggage.

after extensive negotiations she was permitted to pass through in order to stand on a bus for 20 minutes. reports suggest that she travelled further by coach than by air on her return to portugal, where she was eventually greeted by the usual tearful deputation.

rumours suggest that peter pick has also arrived in portugal. he is making the usual fuss about his accommodation and the number of readings and performances he is expected to do, his position on the billing and publicity material and so-on.

we are having a party! artists and performers from portugal, england, germany, brazil, turkey and russia are scheduled to present their work, conduct workshops and fraternise gently. extraordinary things are going to happen, including a performance by chocolate puppets.

many good things are brown, and we will share these too. food, for example, and beer.

MAO (marionetas, actores & objectos) of viana do castelo will perform a terrifying allegory and they will also offer a workshop with chocolate puppets.
